By definition “an obsolete word for factory”
The origins of goods made by hand were generated from within a manufactory. Items such as shoes, furniture, fabrics and leather goods, all made by hand.
The passage of time has seen these places morph into either a factory or a manufacturing plant.
Personally I prefer the heritage of manufactory.
